What Is It?

Nitrox refers to any gas mixture of nitrogen and oxygen. This includes atmospheric air, which is approximately 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1% other gases. So technically speaking, we dive Nitrox every time we dive. But in our industry, it refers to higher concentrations of Oxygen. The most common use is to reduce the partial pressure of nitrogen to extend dive time and reduce the risk of decompression sickness.

You’ll learn everything you need to know to dive safely with Nitrox. Including why diving with air that has higher oxygen and lower nitrogen content gives you more bottom time, along with enriched air equipment considerations. During a practical session, and two dives, you’ll:

• Discuss managing oxygen exposure.
• Practice analyzing oxygen content in your scuba tank.
• Set your dive computer for diving with enriched air nitrox.

You may be able to get college credit for the Enriched Air Diver course. Ask an instructor to learn more.

We’ll provide you everything you need for the course. That said, we do suggest owing your own dive computer, which is helpful because most modern scuba equipment and dive computers can be used with enriched air. If you need advice on if your gear meets manufacturer recommendations and local requirements, just ask your instructor during the program.
